Lars Calmar (b. 1968) is probably one of Denmarks
most talented living sculptors. Calmar focuses on depicting the human body—not the "young, well-proportioned" body often seen in both classical and contemporary art. Instead, Calmar portrays decay, sagging, wrinkles, fullness, and fat.
His sculptures are naturalistic, combining humor with biting seriousness. Through humor, Calmar's sculptures allow viewers to approach the work more directly, potentially leading them to a deeper understanding.
One might suddenly recognize that this is, in fact, how most bodies look when age and inertia have left their marks—naked and vulnerable beneath the designer clothes.
By combining his figures with strong symbols, such as a boxing glove, a hunting rifle, or a crocodile,
Lars Calmar creates a powerful contrast to the slackness and stagnation of aging, naked bodies.
Lars Calmar has exhibited in cities including Chicago, New York, and Toronto. In Denmark he participated in Art Copenhagen from 1998 to 2008. His works have been purchased by the Ministry of Culture and the Funen Art Foundation
